Cornwall Comes from Behind to Best Wolves

 By Jay Harris

The Wolves looked to start a new win streak when they faced off against the Cornwall Nationals at the Watertown Municipal Arena Monday night. Their previous four-game win streak came to an end after a devastating loss to the Danbury Titans Sunday night. The Wolves roster saw the return of Colin McIntosh. Shane Halaas and Jesse Facchini were missing from the Wolves' bench.

The first period would not see a goal from either team, but not for a lack of trying. Watertown outshot Cornwall 16 shots on goal to 10.

The goal lights got some use in the second period. Mark Petaccio would make the first goal of the game on a pass from Colin McIntosh. A slashing penalty on Joshua Blacksmith gave the Wolves a power play that worked out better for the Nationals. Sylvester Bzdyl would tie the game with a shorthanded goal. Nate O'Brien made a fast break into Nationals territory and passed the puck across the ice to Stanislav Vlasov, then he in turn passed it down the crease to Colin McIntosh to give the Wolves a 2-1 lead at the 8-minute mark. Joe Cannan reached over an official to throw a punch at Wolf Ryan Connolly and would continue his efforts to get to Connolly even with two officials between them. Cannan's antics earned him a 4-minute double minor, 10-minute game misconduct, and ejection from the game. The Wolves power play again turned out to be an advantage for the Nationals as Maxime Guyon tied the game back up.

Cornwall took the lead in the third with two goals in the first five minutes of the period. Anthony Mezzagno and former Watertown coach Brett Clarke scoring them respectively. The exhaustion of four games in four days for the Wolves showed as they were unable to get a shot past goalie Nicolas Deslong champs. Cornwall held on to win 4-2.

The 3 stars of the game were awarded to Colin McIntosh, Mark Petaccio, and Nate O'Brien. The next home game for the Wolves will be on Friday, January 27 when the Watertown Wolves will face the Danbury Titans. The Puck will drop at 7:30 pm at the Watertown Municipal Arena.
