Déjà Vu: Wolves Double Up Dashers Again
By Jay Harris
Watertown, NY - It was Stand Up Against Bullying Night at Watertown Municipal Arena for the last of the three game series between the Watertown Wolves and the Danville Dashers on Sunday night. Proceeds from program sales and other fundraisers benefited the Daniel Briggs Memorial Fund to help end bullying in the North Country. The Wolves looked for a clean sweep of the series after winning Friday and Saturday nights' games.
Lester Brown's pass to Troy Polino resulted in a deflected shot by Matt Kaludis that Wolves Captain John Scully caught and flipped into the net for the first goal of the game. Justin Brausen tied up the game 1-all on assists from Justin Levac and Matt Kaludis. The lone penalty of the period was called on new Wolf Simon Sefcik for hooking.
Aleh Shypitsyn took the lead back for the Wolves on a pass from Tyler Gjurich, sent by Troy Polino. Physical game play between Danville's Nick Williams and Watertown's Martin Trudman resulted in Williams leaving the game after being left down on the ice clutching his shoulder. Williams earned a boarding penalty to Trudman's cross-checking penalty for the altercation. Brandon Patterson tied the game back up, bouncing the puck off Wolf Kyle Powell to make it 2-all with just 41 seconds left in the period. The Wolves decided they weren't done scoring yet when a Cameron Dimmitt pass to Kyle Powell set up Gavin Yates to take the lead back, 3-2 with just 6 seconds left in the period.
The feisty third period saw spats between Justin Brausen and Tyler Gjurich, Kyle Stevens and Tyler Gjurich, a fight between Alex Basey and Connor Annett, and a tangle with CJ Hayes and Matt Coleman. Tyler Gjurich would cap off the period with a goal from Lester Brown and John Scully for a final score of 4-2.
The three Stars of the Game went to Watertown's John Scully, Connor Annett, and Tyler Gjurich. The Wolves have a three game stretch in North Carolina with the Thunderbirds, and return to the Watertown Municipal Arena to take on the Cornwall Nationals on Friday, February 23rd at 7:30 PM.
