Enforcers Outscore Wolves
By Jay Harris
Watertown, NY - The Elmira Enforcers denied the Watertown Wolves a sweep in their three-game weekend series, taking Sunday evening's game by a score of 5-1 at Watertown Municipal Arena.
It was déjà vu in the first period, as Elmira took a 2-0 lead with goals coming from Ahmed Mahfouz and Tyler Prendergast just a little over four minutes into the game. The Wolves successfully killed Lane King's holding penalty early on, and Stepan Timofeyev earned himself a five-minute major late in the frame for boarding Josh Newberg.
Elmira added three goals to their lead in the second period with two from Mahfouz to give him a hat trick, and one from Kyle Stevens. Goal number five was the cue for Watertown's Head Coach Trevor Karasiewicz to switch goalies. Jared Rutledge was switched out of the net for the newly acquired Blake Scott. Watertown racked up two penalties forty seconds apart late in the frame, creating a 5-on-3 power play that carried over into the third period.
Watertown's Tim Santopaolo denied Troy Passingham a shutout, scoring at the 13:31 mark of the third on assists from King and Justin Coachman. Scott denied all the Enforcers' shots he faced in the net for Watertown.
The 1st Star of the Game went to Ahmed Mahfouz for his hat trick. Stepan Timofeyev earned the 2nd Star with four points on the night. Watertown's Blake Scott was credited the 3rd Star for stopping all the shots on goal he faced.
The Wolves will host the Carolina Thunderbirds on Friday, February 22nd at 7:30 PM at Watertown Municipal Arena.
