Wolves Push Danbury to Overtime in Saturday Thriller

by Nicholas A. Moulton

WATERTOWN, N.Y. — The Watertown Wolves gave their home crowd a Saturday-night show at the Northern Credit Union Community Arena, battling the Danbury Hat Tricks to overtime before falling 5-4, as Danbury completed the weekend sweep.

Danbury struck first when Jordon Kromm scored from the left circle at 9:17 of the opening frame. Bret Parker answered minutes later with his third goal of the season, leaving it knotted at 1-1 after one.

The Wolves' offense came alive in the second period. Hunter Hall converted on the power play at 3:33 to put Watertown ahead, and after Eli Rivers tied it for Danbury, Brendan Hussey took over — burying two goals to close out the frame and send the Wolves into the second intermission up 4-2.

The lead didn't survive the third. Danbury opened the period on the power play and Rivers cashed in to make it 4-3. With just under five minutes remaining, Rivers completed the hat trick on a rebound from the left circle, knotting it at 4-4 and forcing overtime.

The extra frame lasted just 39 seconds: Grady Friedman slid through the slot and tucked one past Samuel Zgiet for the winner, his first goal of the season.

Hussey's two-goal night led the Wolves, with Parker and Hall also finding the net. Watertown converted twice on the man advantage.

The Wolves get a week to regroup before their next home stand: the Blue Ridge Bobcats visit the Northern Credit Union Community Arena on Friday, Oct. 23 and Saturday, Oct. 24, with puck drop at 7:05 p.m. both nights.
